Krefeld. “For more than ten years I have had the opportunity to accompany the innovative development of the Krefeld Zoo as a member of the management team”

The future director of the Krefeld Zoo is a familiar face: Dr. Stefanie Markowski, who at the end of the year replaced the long-time incumbent Dr. Wolfgang Dreßen, has been employed as a zoo veterinarian and curator at Zoo Krefeld gGmbH for eleven years. The shareholders’ meeting unanimously elected her as the new managing director on Thursday, May 11th. “I would like to thank the shareholders for the trust they have placed in me, and I look forward to the new task with respect, but also with great anticipation,” explains Dr. Stefanie Markowski. “For more than ten years I have had the opportunity to accompany the innovative development of the Krefeld Zoo as a member of the management team and I have confidence in working with the committed colleagues in the team to continue to modernize the zoo and make it fit for the future.” For the first three months, the new zoo director will take up her post from October in a kind of “double leadership” together with Dr. Wolfgang Dreßen, who will retire on December 31, 2023.

Mayor Frank Meyer accompanied the application process

As a representative of the main shareholder, the city of Krefeld, Mayor Frank Meyer accompanied the application process. He is convinced that in the end the right candidate prevailed. “The attraction of the zoo far beyond Krefeld and its immense effect as a point of identification for the people in our city give this personality great importance,” emphasizes Frank Meyer. “Our zoo needs competence and continuity. dr Stefanie Markowski has already extensively contributed to the recent success story. I am convinced that it will drive modernization and further strengthen its role as an educational institution.
