Dr. Dave Chokshi Ends His Term as NYC Health Commissioner – NBC New York (47)

This Monday, March 14, Dr. Dave Chokshi last served as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Chokshi, often known as “the city doctor”, said goodbye to his position, thanking his team and highlighting how, in the midst of the dark days of the pandemic, his love of service and his pride in having helped in difficult times were highlighted. .

“We have lived through a time filled with so many dark days and so much suffering, but public health and the healing professions in general offered light during COVID. It was not just about tests, drugs or vaccines, but about talking about fears, anxieties and uncertainties of New Yorkers, and to provide a road map for navigating them, even when solutions were imperfect,” said Dr. Chokshi. “I am proud to have helped forge a public health practice that marries the values ​​of science, fairness and compassion. And also one that embraces bold action and a spirit of service and excellence. Ultimately, the The legacy of any leader is their people, and that gives me great confidence, because I know how stellar and dedicated my teammates are in the Department of Health,” he added.

The Department of Health was not far behind and with an emotional video showing his farewell, he thanked Dr. Dave Chokshi for his leadership as commissioner.

Dr. Chokshi will be replaced by Dr. Ashwin Vasan, a primary care physician and mental health expert. Dr. Chokshi gave way to him wishing him well.

“Can’t wait to see what he and the team accomplish during his tenure as City Health Commissioner,” he wrote on his Twitter.

Chokshi became Health Commissioner in August 2020 during former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration. He also remains a practicing primary care physician in Bellevue.

Vasan is the CEO of Fountain House, a nonprofit organization working on health care and opportunities for the seriously mentally ill. He is also on the faculty of Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health and treats patients at New York-Presbyterian.
