DR Congo – 6,000 killed by measles

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, more than 6,000 people have now died of measles.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the epidemic there is the largest and fastest in the world. Around 310,000 suspected measles cases have been reported since the beginning of last year. There has been an emergency vaccination program in the Congo since September. More than 18 million children under the age of five have been vaccinated.

The fact that the disease spreads so quickly in the Central African country is partly due to the poor infrastructure and the fact that far from everyone has access to routine health care. Health centers in the Congo are also often attacked.

Measles has killed more people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo than Ebola.
