Dozens of women kidnapped in Burkina Faso, presumably by jihadists

NOS News

About fifty women have been kidnapped in Burkina Faso, presumably by jihadists. The local authorities and residents report this to the AFP news agency. The kidnappings already happened on Thursday and Friday, but are only now coming out.

Residents of the northern town of Arbinda say two groups of women were taken as they were collecting leaves and fruit. There is a major food shortage in the region.

“When they hadn’t come back by Thursday evening, we thought there was a problem with their carts,” a resident told AFP. “Three kidnapped women eventually managed to escape and were able to tell us what had happened.”

Years of instability in Burkina Faso

Arbinda is hit hard by jihadists in the region. Many routes are blocked, there is very little food and there is a humanitarian crisis.

Burkina Faso has been carrying out attacks by extremists for years. At least 2 million inhabitants have fled the violence. Last year there were two coups in the country.
