The group tried to enter the police station, but were unsuccessful. They smashed windows and detonated mortars. Images on Twitter show that a large amount of fireworks were set off. Two police cars were badly damaged. No one has been arrested.
The mayor of Champigny says it was a coordinated attack in which dozens of people turned against the police. It would have been a retaliation for a scooter accident earlier this week in which the police would have been involved.
The Home Secretary has also responded. On Twitter he says the cops have his full support, and that “gang leaders” are not impressing. The police station in the French suburb has been attacked several times. In April the office was still bombarded with fireworks.
