Whether for jogging or to take a walk: The Phoenix Lake is a magnet in Dortmund. However, what always causes discussion is the parking situation.

Phoenix Lake in Dortmund: Parking is an issue again after residents’ protests

However, the more people enjoy the water and the sun at the popular meeting point, the more a well-known excitement topic comes back into focus. The parking situation at Lake Phoenix is getting worse.

Whether for a limited time for visitors or only for residents: Parking at the Phoenix Lake in Dortmund has always provided a lot of discussion material, so a new parking space concept should create clarity.

Dortmund: Parking at Phoenix Lake regulated with a parking concept

But the residents were also dissatisfied with that. “We speak out very clearly against the parking concept because we believe that it would not solve the problems,” said a resident of the street An den Emscherauen opposite the Ruhr news (Paid content).

They – like other residents – fear that the popularity of the lake will be carried on the back of the residents. After a signature campaign with 270 participants who spoke out against the updated concept, the draft for parking at Phoenix-See in Dortmund was discussed again at the Hörde district council on Tuesday (February 23).

Phoenix-See: Relaxation when parking by the water in Dortmund

The aim of the concept is still to bring relaxation to the parking situation around the popular body of water in Dortmund. However, the problems are complex – free parking space is associated with increased traffic looking for a parking space. In addition, there were already differences with posers who were even pelted with eggs by residents at Phoenix Lake in Dortmund. However, these have apparently been brought under control.

The original plan was that a parking ticket with a maximum duration of three hours should be compulsory at public parking spaces between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Cost for one hour: 50 cents. In the Weingartenstrasse / Am Remberg to Kohlensiepenstrasse, however, a residential parking zone was planned.

Dortmund: Parking at Lake Phoenix is a constant topic of discussion

Another problem arose with the new buildings. Around the Phoenix-See on the streets Am Kai, Phoenixseestrasse and An den Emscherauen there are enough private parking spaces, but here the residents felt restricted by the management of some parking areas. You do not see that, for example, visitors or they would have to pay parking fees, a resident said according to the Ruhr news.

In the course of this, the district council decided to only charge parking spaces until 6 p.m. instead of charging them until 10 p.m. The SPD parliamentary group said that the possibility of parking your own vehicles was apparently rated higher than the risk of increasing traffic looking for a parking space after 6 p.m.

Parking at Phoenix-See: That was decided in the district representation in Dortmund-Hörde

The result of the district representation was in large parts a return to the original park concept. This justified the parliamentary group leader of the SPD council group Werner Sauerländer: “Because it takes the interests of residents and visitors into account appropriately.”

  • Parking spaces should only be managed until 6 p.m.
  • The streets Phoenixseestrasse, Am Kai, An den Emscherauen and the southern part of Kohlensiepenstrasse are excluded from this. However, there is a risk that the parking spaces are used for free parking by visitors.
  • There should be residential parking spaces on the streets Weingartenstraße / Am Remberg.
  • Furthermore, the maximum parking time of three hours should apply.

It also says that success should be checked after one to two years.
