Doomsday threatens: no new films in the cinema for the time being

At the moment, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is the first major summer film of 2020. But will that film really be released? There is a doom scenario in the air now that the corona crisis in the States flares up again. In the United States, the coronavirus is said to reoccur, including in the state of California where Hollywood is located. And just like in other countries, North American cinema chains are reluctant to open the doors wide, something that is difficult anyway due to the many safety regulations such as social distancing, or the 1.5-meter rule.

Many films have already been moved on

In recent weeks we have seen many films flee the month of July. Yesterday, Disney moved the fairy tale film Mulan by a month. The thriller Unhinged with Russell Crowe seems to be the biggest release of the month (July 31).

The month of August offers next Tenet in Mulan several larger films with the disaster film Greenland and the Marvel film The New Mutants. Only in September will several major films start to appear again per weekend, with the biggest blockbusters in November and December.

Possible doom scenario on the way

In recent months, many films have been moved to 2021, including months after the summer. Yesterday that happened with the action thriller Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse with Michael B. Jordan. In addition, hardly any new trailers appear, certainly not for the films that have received the first trailer.

Partly because the corona outbreak seems far from under control in the States, it is not an unthinkable situation that the holiday month of August also remains empty and that the smaller cinema films such as Bill & Ted Face the Music and Antebellum go to streaming or Premium Video on Demand, or also be postponed.

Blockbusters again in November?

September and October have traditionally not been a studio favorite. If the corona crisis continues, it could be that Warner Bros. Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 moved to November – old spot already moved to 2021 Godzilla vs. Kong – and December – town of Dune.

Disney would Mulan give the place of the animated film Soul and put that film on Disney +, or move it as a Christmas film to December and compete with The Croods 2.

More movies to 2021

The other often slightly smaller films such as A Quiet Place Part II, The King’s Man and Death on the Nile, which are due to be released in September and October, could easily get a spot in the spring of 2021. It is questionable whether the planned movies – like Tomb Raider 2 – completed on time, as there are still many productions on hold.

The doomsday scenario would be a death blow to many cinemas and chains worldwide. However, this will not outweigh global health risks for governments and the public. What do you think? How realistic is this scenario?
