Doni Monardo Is Replaced, Observers Suspect There is an ‘Allergy’ from the Palace

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Trisakti University public policy observer Trubus Rahadiansyah assessed his removal Doni Monardo from the post of Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) political.

It is known that Doni was replaced by TNI Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Ganip Warsito, Tuesday (25/5), on the grounds that he had entered retirement age.

Trubus suspects that the replacement of the Head of BNPB was carried out because there was a suspected case of corruption in the Covid-19 test kit that dragged Doni’s name.

“It seems that this factor (in the case of alleged corruption of the Covid-19 test kit). The Palace in quotation marks is very allergic if any of his subordinates, although not legally proven, do not want any influence in the public,” he said, when contacted. CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (25/5).

Trubus assessed that there is no urgency to replace the current Head of BNPB. Moreover, Indonesia is facing the threat of a second wave which requires high focus.

He also considered that the reason for Doni’s removal was because he would enter an odd retirement period. According to him, Law Number 24 of 2007 concerning Disaster Management and Presidential Decree Number 8 of 2008 concerning BNPB do not limit the term of office of the Head of BNPB.

“If such a presidential policy appears to have political interests, it is not an issue of handling Covid, there are political considerations there,” he said.

CNNIndonesia.com has contacted Presidential Spokesman Fadjroel Rachman to request a response to the claim. CNNIndonesia.com has also contacted Doni Monardo regarding this matter. However, both of them did not respond until this news was broadcast.

Previously, Doni’s name was dragged into a case of alleged corruption in the procurement of Covid-19 test kits. The case was revealed to the public after a report by Tempo Magazine and the Investigative Journalist Club and Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW).

In the report, dozens of hospitals were said to have returned hundreds of thousands of Covid-19 test reagents because they had expired. ICW estimates that the state’s loss due to the incident is around IDR170 billion.

Doni denied this accusation in a meeting with the Indonesian Parliament. He said his party had worked according to procedure.

“So what is clear is that the procurement of goods and services at BNPB or in the task force is carried out transparently and accountably involving all parties,” said Doni at the DPR RI Commission IX Working Meeting, Monday (15/3).
