Washington – President Donald Trump he refused to publicly promise to respect the results of the November elections and dismissed polls that his Democratic rival Joe Biden has much more support.
“I will have to see, you know, I will have to see,” Trump told host Chris Wallace in an interview with “Fox News Sunday.”
“I am not going to say yes, and I am not going to say no, just as I refused to do it in past elections.”added the president.
It is highly unusual for a US president to refuse to fully endorse the electoral process. But for Trump, it’s part of his rebellious rhetoric and echoes what he did four years ago when he claimed he would recognize the results only if he won.
In a debate in October 2016 with his then Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, Trump was pressured as to whether he would respect the election results, to which he replied that he wished to “leave everyone on hold.”
Popular support for Trump has been declining amid the coronavirus crisis and the wave of protests against racism and social injustice, following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after being arrested by police. whites in Minneapolis in May.
Trump insists that the polls showing him lagging behind Biden are flawed, and that Republicans are not being properly surveyed.
“First of all, I am not losing because those are false surveys”, declaró Trump.
“Already in 2016 they were false and today they are even more false. The polls in 2016 were even worse, “he added.
