Since 2004, National Law 25,936 established November 9 as the National Day of the Voluntary Blood Donor, a reminder and a way of raising awareness, in an exercise of solidarity and commitment to life. In our city, the Blood Bank is the institution dedicated to the collection of voluntary donations.

The Blood Bank of the National University of Córdoba it currently receives around 1,300 annual donations from UNC students, faculty, and non-teaching staff. This permanent commitment of the university community contributes to the objective of achieving self-sufficiency of blood components for the entire population of the province of Córdoba.

We spoke with the lawyer Nelda Gil, from the Press and Diffusion area of the Blood Bank, who tells us that a short time ago the donation levels have been progressively recovering. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many donors, out of fear of the virus, due to restrictions, and for various reasons, were not approaching to donate. Little by little they are coming back and new people are joining. “For us, this reactivation is very important, because since the pandemic began – not only our blood bank, but also at the national level – donations fell a lot, at least 50%, especially in the first months of last year. ”Says Nelda.

Before the Covid-19, the main donor nucleus came from the collections that were made on Thursdays in the different faculties of the University, which have not yet recovered because the presence has not been resumed. Given the circumstances, new options have been created.

“The external collections constitute a great contribution of voluntary donors. These types of activities were not carried out throughout 2020 and during 2021 only those on Saturdays were resumed in towns in the interior that had a controlled epidemiological situation. The positive thing is that, in recent months, many institutions have voluntarily joined in opening the doors of their place for us and generating a campaign, a blood collection, in their community. Be it a neighborhood center, a club, a gym; next week, the scouts also join, a school. These institutions are allowing us to maintain the amount of donors that we had with the faculties, now we have it on the other hand, ”they explain from the Blood Bank and emphasize the importance of dissemination.

“The important thing is that there is stock, that’s why the importance of donors being volunteers and not waiting for someone we know or someone from the family to need to go out and ask for donations,” they add. According to available information, a donation takes approximately 15 minutes and in Argentina 5,000 donations are needed daily. Every time someone donates blood, they help save up to four lives.
