When this atypical character, who would one day be at the head of the Louvre Museum, left his native Burgundy for Paris in 1765, it was originally to study law there. But the young man has always shown a particular taste and talent for drawing, and very quickly realizes that it is in the fine arts that he will find his way. But to make his mark as an artist, he must first meet the king. So, every day, Dominique Vivant Denon goes and stands in the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, and stares at Louis XV so that he notices him… How will his career begin? In this first part of the episode produced by Europe 1 Studio, Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach recounts the first steps of Vivant Denon in the service of the king.
In this new episode of the podcast “At the heart of history”, Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach tells the story of Dominique Vivant Denon, a great precursor in the history of art, known mainly today for having organized the museum of Louvre. Louis XV made Denon an “ordinary gentleman of the king” and sent him to Russia as a spy. There, Denon uses his charm and his wit to extract information on enemy countries. There he met Diderot, who negotiated for the Russians the sale of one of the most important French collections of paintings.
