Does Nvidia have to worry now?

The rumor mill is getting hot again. After the first details of Nvidia’s upcoming RTX-3000 graphics cards were published, information about a new GPU from AMD came to light. Does Nvidia have to worry now?

AMD Navi 31: New GPU from AMD spotted in macOS

Nvidia new generation of graphics cards should start in late summer or early autumn – and also information about AMDs upcoming RDNA-2 GPUs were already making the rounds.

However, another GPU has been spotted by Team Rot, like HardwareLeaks reported – in the graphics card drivers from macOS. There are entries for a GPU called “Navi 31”. It is currently not possible to say whether this is a new exclusive high-end GPU for the Mac.

AMD follows suit: The next generation of graphics cards also supports ray tracing:

AMD Navi 31 – real information about the graphics card is still in short supply

In general, not much can be derived from the sighting in the graphics drivers. That doesn’t stop the rumor mill from speculating wildly, of course. For example, some assume that the AMD graphics card is a chiplet-style model that AMD is already using in the production of its Ryzen CPUs. In this way, the chip manufacturer should be able to cobble together a particularly powerful graphics card model, which should even compete with Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce RTX 3080 Ti / 3090.

Others, on the other hand, think that this is a graphics chip that AMD produces in cooperation with Apple and which is therefore only used in Macs.

Only time can tell what it really is with Navi 31 in the end. What is certain, however, is that we will most likely have to be patient for a long time before we see the graphics chip. Finally, the Ryzen 4000 processors and the graphics cards with RDNA-2 architecture will be launched in the course of the year. With the release of Navi 31, we can most likely only expect next year.

Until then, Nvidia will most likely not need to worry about its supremacy. Though one shouldn’t forget that AMD is his „Nvidia-Killer“ Big Navi also has a hot iron in the fire.
