Doctors in training pay more attention to the impact of healthy eating

Traditionally, the medical world is mainly about making people better. In recent years, however, the balance has shifted more towards the question of how to keep people healthy. Eating healthy is part of the answer. Doctors, especially general practitioners, can play a greater role in this, Trouw writes.

Healthy food and health

That is why students of medicine from Utrecht University and students of nutrition and health from Wageningen University will meet each other next academic year for joint projects. “We are trying to make doctors even more aware of the influence of nutrition,” says Rolf Marteijn, program director for nutrition and health at Wageningen University.

General practitioner as point of contact

He mainly sees a role for the GP because he is the first point of contact for people with complaints. “We don’t want to turn the GP into half a nutritionist,” says Marteijn. “But now nutrition hardly plays a role in training. By changing that, through collaboration, we ensure that students start to see nutrition as part of health.” (ANP/Skipr)
