Doctors call HIV in children often does not cause typical symptoms

The child’s name is usually the symptoms are not typical

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Pediatrician of the Friendship Hospital dr. M. Ramdhani Yassien, MMRS, Sp.A said HIV in children often does not cause typical symptoms, so it can sometimes mislead parents.

“The child’s name is usually the symptoms are not typical. Because we know that HIV attacks the immune system, so any disease can occur, and we know that this small child’s immune system has not been properly trained,” she said Ramdhani in conversation. followed by online health services in Jakarta on Tuesday.

For this reason, according to him, the symptoms that arise when a child is infected with HIV will depend on which body system is affected by the infection.

“Because HIV is not alone, some are nebeng. The HIV virus is like driving a motor and there are a few nebeng i.e. other diseases. So the symptoms depend on who it is nebeng‘ Ramdhani said.

“If that nebeng for example tuberculosis germs, it will have symptoms of tuberculosis disease, depending on what tuberculosis is, it may be pulmonary tuberculosis, it may be brain tuberculosis,” he added.

Separately, members of the Indonesian Association of Pediatricians’ (IDAI) HIV task force, Dr. Dwiyanti Puspitasari, DTMH., MCTM (TP), Sp.A(K) said there are several warning signs that parents should not ignore if their child is infected with HIV.

“Usually if you take medication regularly, your body’s resistance will be better. In other words, it’s like other children who don’t have HIV. But if you start getting sick again and again, for example, your tongue is often white and has a fever. No obviously, diarrhea and other things, that’s a sign that maybe we should be careful,” Dwiyanti said.

Other warning signs, she continued, are shortness of breath and frequent coughing, skin rashes, sudden bruising and a change in demeanor.

According to him, these signs could be due to opportunistic infections caused by various types of microbes such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and other parasites.

To avoid this, Dwiyanti said parents need to closely monitor their child and make sure he doesn’t come into contact with patients with infectious infections.

“Because if you get an infection, (children with HIV) can actually tend to have more severe (symptoms) than other children,” Dwiyanti said.
