SANTO DOMINGO.- Dr. Alejandro Emilio Báez Van-Epps, father of the former adviser to the Executive Power in health matters, Amado Alejandro Báez, died after spending several days in hospital with Coronavirus.
The information was released by Alejandro Báez, who was also the former director of the COVID-19 Health Emergency Management Committee in the past Government.
When writing an account of what the family went through after their parents were infected with the virus, the prominent specialist narrated that they had four weeks struggling with complications from the Coronavirus in their parents. His mother Victoria is still hospitalized with the disease.
“On December 24, daddy went into cardiac arrest, I revived him and took him to the same ICU, (just feet away) from mommy. Some days better than others, the day before his death he grabbed my hand hard and I told him repeatedly: Everything will be fine, everything will be fine, “he said.
“On the 31st at home there was no appetite for celebration. The first, to celebrate the year, I brought daddy a player with a super Spotify list of his favorite classical music, it gave me satisfaction knowing that he was going to like that gift. They let me in in the ICU and they tell me, Dr. Báez, sit there. I didn’t have to say more ”, was part of the message published by the son who dedicated 70 years of his life to medicine and 30 to teaching.
He expressed that the team tried to revive him professionally, for which he appreciated his compassion at such a difficult time.
Dr. Báez Van-Epps was buried yesterday. “A sad and empty ceremony, not representative of the life of a man who from the age of 16 dedicated 70 consecutive years to medicine,” said his son.
He graduated from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) in 1958, and for 30 years he taught at UNPHU. In addition to Alejandro, with his wife Victoria he procreated Alexandra.
“Rest in peace daddy, thank you for everything you were and everything you gave us,” Báez ends his letter dedicated to his father.
In an interview offered by the specialist to Listín Diario on June 16, when he served as director of the COVID-19 Health Emergency Management Committee, Alejandro Báez emphasized the need for citizens to take care of themselves, because “the virus kills ”.
Alejandro Baéz was convinced that COVID-19 must be afraid of. “The virus makes sick, the virus kills, there are hundreds of Dominicans who have lost their lives due to this virus and we have to understand that there are millions of Dominicans who have made sacrifices so that we are at a better point and that the worst that can happen is relax the measures on a personal level, because I’m fed up, “he said by then.
In the interview, published on June 16 in the section “An Appointment with the Covid”, the doctor recalled the sacrifices he made to take care of his parents, due to his advanced age, so they were within the group of vulnerable people. He said he had to greet them from afar.
“It is very difficult for me to be in the country and not be able to live with my parents. I visit them sporadically but I don’t give them hugs, I keep my distance, I wear masks, clean hands, it is a matter of understanding that you have to invest in the greatest, not lose much for the little ”.
