Do not use hand gel on your cat! | Abroad

“They can damage the legs and get poison if they lick their paw.”

Hand or other disinfectant gels or liquids used to disinfect our hands against the coronavirus are not suitable for animals. They can cause severe irritation and open wounds causing infections.

Because dogs and cats constantly wash themselves and lick their paws, a lot of poison comes in, says Alain Schonbrodt, spokesperson for the Professional Veterenary Union in Belgium. They will not die immediately, but they can get sick.

Anyone who wants to disinfect their pet should use soap and water, according to the vet.

Schonbrodt advises to just make a block with your pet, “but keep it away from other animals and people.”

It is best to keep cats indoors during corona times. They are more likely to come into contact with infected people outside.
