DMV encourages Californians to switch to a REAL ID as the seasons change

Sacramento – – According to data from the Department of Motor Vehicles, more than 14.3 million Californians now have REAL IDs as the federal enforcement date of May 3, 2023 approaches. This is an increase of 234,116 from the previous month.

“Autumn is in the air and Halloween is almost here. Not all changes are quick or scary, like getting a REAL ID, “said DMV Director Steve Gordon.” All you have to do is fill out an application, upload your documents online, and take a quick trip to the DMV. no need to wait, come today.

Starting next May, the US Department of Homeland Security will require a valid passport or other document approved by the federal governmentsuch as a driver’s license or REAL ID card, to board flights within the United States and access federal facilities.

To apply for a REAL ID, Californians must visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov, complete the online application, and upload their documents. Clients must visit a DMV office and bring uploaded documents to complete the application. Customers must provide:

  • Proof of identity *: an original or certified document (example: valid passport, birth certificate)
    *Legal name change document (s) if the name on the proof of identity is different from the name on the other documents (example: marriage certificate, adoption documents)
  • Proof of California residency: two documents, hard copies (example: utility bill, bank statement)
  • Social Security Number (exceptions may apply)

  • Total REAL ID holders as of September 1, 2022: 14,328,554
  • Total REAL ID holders as of August 1, 2022: 14,094,438
  • Total REAL ID holders as of September 1, 2021: 11,661,231

Online services

The DMV has taken many steps to offer more digital services. Most DMV transactions don’t require an office visit. DMV encourages customers to use its online services and other service channels to complete transactions, including driver license renewals and eligible vehicle registration. Customers can also use Service Advisor on the DMV website to learn about their options for completing DMV transactions.

To register and receive digital driver license renewal and vehicle registration notices, customers must log in or create a secure online account at dmv.ca.gov, then register.
