Djokovic withdraws his candidacy to the ATP to promote his own association

Belgrade, Dec 22 (EFE) .- The world’s number one tennis player, Serbian Novak Djokovic, today withdrew his candidacy to preside over the ATP Players Council, in order to remain in the PTPA, the association that he himself has promoted , given that the regulations prevent belonging to both.

In a statement released through Twitter, the Serbian has assured that he does not want to “have conflicts” with the ATP, which just a month ago approved a rule prohibiting tennis players from being part of two associations simultaneously.

“This rule puts me in a difficult situation,” said the winner of 17 grand slams, who assures that the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), which promoted this year, has no intention of being ” combative “with the ATP.

Djokovic stepped down as chairman of the ATP players’ board in August to form the independent union, but ran again after being nominated by a number of players.

The Serbian tennis player states in his message that he resigns from the candidacy “with great regret” and has pointed out that conflicts of interest have to be avoided “at all levels of the ATP structure.”

“I really believe that there is a way to improve the lives of many players, especially those who are lower in the classification”, he said, who thinks that the PTPA can achieve this goal “in the near future”.

Players like the Spanish Rafa Nadal, the Swiss Roger Federer or the British Andy Murray at the time showed opposition to the new association promoted by the Serbian tennis player. EFE
