Djokovic struggles; Alcaraz escapes after a rough start | Tennis

sport">It already seemed fast walk in the park to become the Serbian number 2 in the world. The South Korean had to watch as Djokovic quickly won the first set: 6-3. But suddenly started Nole to falter. Kwon took a 5-2 lead in set 2. The Serb didn’t move quite as we are used to from him and so Kwon was allowed to serve for the set win and that worked out 6-3.

sport">Djokovic also struggled in the third set. He had a hard time getting rid of Kwon and even had to get rid of a breaking point at 2-2. But in the end it is about the 20-time grand slam and six-time winner of Wimbledon. At 4-3 he broke the South Korean and it eventually became 6-3 in the third set.

Tough Kwon

sport">The resistance of the tough Kwon was actually broken, because he also had to allow a break in the fourth set. That was enough for the Serb: 6-4 and so set and match.

sport">It was only his first grass game of the year for 35-year-old Djokovic. The world’s number 3 last came into action a month ago. He then lost at Roland Garros in the quarterfinals to Rafael Nadal.

Five years ago last defeat at Wimbledon

sport">Djokovic last lost at Wimbledon five years ago. He then gave up against the Czech Tomas Berdych. Since then, he has won the title three times and in 2020 the tournament was canceled due to the outbreak of the corona virus.

sport">Due to the absence of Daniil Medvedev, the number 1 in the world, Djokovic has been placed first in London. The Russian Medvedev is not welcome at Wimbledon because of the war in Ukraine. Alexander Zverev, from Monday the global number 2, is injured.

Outsider Hurkacz immediately eliminated

sport">Polish tennis player Hubert Hurkacz has been eliminated in the opening round of Wimbledon. The number 10 in the world lost 7-6 (4) 6-4 5-7 2-6 7-6 (8) to Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the global number 37. In the fifth set, 6-6 played a decisive tiebreak to ten points.

sport">Davidovich Fokina left three match points unused in a row in the third set on his own service. The party turned completely over and Hurkacz had the initiative for a long time. The Pole also served for the match in the fifth set, but he handed in his service game. Hurkacz also led 7-4 in the decisive match tiebreak.

sport">The 25-year-old Hurkacz, who was placed seventh, was considered an outsider for the title in London. Last year he reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and in the run-up to this year’s edition he won the Halle grass tournament.

sport">For Davidovich Fokina two years younger, it was only his first ever win at Wimbledon. At the previous grand slam tournament, Roland Garros, the Spaniard lost in the opening round to Tallon Greek track.

Alcaraz escapes after a rough start

sport">Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz just managed to avoid elimination. The number 5 of the placement list fought against the German Jan-Lennard Struff in five sets. In four hours and eleven minutes it became 4-6 7-5 4-6 7-6 (3) 6-4.

sport">Both players lost their service game only twice. Alcaraz, who hit no fewer than thirty aces, won only four points more than his opponent: 192 to 188. For Alcaraz (19), who had not played since Roland Garros, it was only his second win of his career at Wimbledon. Last year he had no chance against Daniil Medvedev in the second round in three sets.

Cilic drops out of Van de Zandschulp schedule

sport">Marin Cilic has withdrawn from Wimbledon. The 33-year-old Croat, a finalist in London in 2017, will not play due to illness. At the beginning of this month, the number 17 in the world made it to the last four at Roland Garros. Cilic could have been the opponent of Botic van de Zandschulp, the number 21 of the placement list, in the third round. The Croat is replaced by the Portuguese lucky loser Nuno Borges. Five years ago, Cilic lost to Roger Federer in the final in three sets at Wimbledon. In 2014 he won the US Open.
