Djokovic officially repeats Sampras’ record

Serb Novak Djokovic officially secured a repeat of American Pete Sampras’ record on Friday, ending the year as the world’s first number for the sixth time.

The only one who could break Djokovic’s record was Rafael Nadal, but the Spaniard refused to play in the Sofia tournament next week, so he would not deprive his rival of the first position.

Djokovic also ranked first in the 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018 seasons.

Samprass finished first in the world for six years in a row – from 1993 to 1998.

Djokovic also has another goal – to beat Federer’s best achievement of all time with 310 weeks at the top of the rankings. He is currently there for 294 weeks.

If he stays in the first position, he will overtake Federer’s achievement in early March 2021.
