Djokovic and Pospisil create a players’ association, Nadal and Federer oppose it

After a meeting on Saturday night, Pospisil shared on his Twitter account a photo in which we can see a group of players on the field of the United States Open.

We are excited to announce the start of the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), he wrote in his tweet.

Djokovic mentioned that the association was not a union, although the distinction was not fully detailed.

The Association did not emerge for the purpose of being combative, disruptive, or causing trouble inside and outside the ATP circuit. It simply serves to unify players, make our voices heard and have an impact on the decisions made that affect our lives., added Pospisil.

Djokovic and Pospisil will be the first two co-chairs of the association, which will also have up to nine directors, all players.

In addition to Nadal and Federer, the ATP Men’s Tour and other sport governing bodies including the WTA Women’s Tour and all four Grand Slam tournaments have expressed their disagreement with the creation of the PTPA. They issued a joint statement on Saturday saying that it was time to see greater collaboration and not a division.

Tennis players have never had a union, as is the case in North American team sports. Each player is considered an independent contractor.

In an emailed letter to the players, both co-chairs indicated that the goal of the PTPA is to train an association whose mandate is to promote, protect and represent the interests of its players and to protect the future of tennis.

We are not calling for a boycott. We are not a parallel circuit, said Djokovic following his victory in the final of the tournament in Cincinnati on Saturday. Obviously I’d like to have Roger and Rafael on board. I would like to have all the players on board. But I understand that some have different opinions.

Djokovic was the chairman of the board of ATP and Pospisil was a representative of players ranked between 51st and 100th. The two men, however, tendered their resignations, as did John Isner.

Andy Murray said on Saturday he wants to give the ATP leader time to work. Murray also doesn’t like the idea that the PTPA only represents male players. Earlier this year there were discussions about the possibility of merging the ATP and the WTA.

A group that represents men and women would send a much more powerful message according to Murray.

Federer and Nadal joined Reps Kevin Anderson, Jurgen Melzer, Sam Querrey and Bruno Soares in sending a note to the players that raised questions about the proposal and added that they disagree with it.

The world is going through a difficult and complicated situation. I personally believe that it is time to work together in the same direction. It’s time to unite, not to separateNadal wrote on Twitter.

Federer shared Nadal’s tweet and he mentioned that he agreed with the Spaniard.
