DJI prepares an FPV drone to film indoors

Clues are piling up around a new drone from DJI intended for indoor flights. This new immersive FPV model, whose name would be “Avata”, could be released this summer.

Two leakers specializing in drones, @DealsDrone et @OsitaLV, have shared news and images about the successor to the first FPV drone released by DJI last year. The device is said to offer similar image quality to the Mini 3 Pro launched last year, but with a larger battery capacity. It would also be supplied with a headset broadcasting the video stream captured by the drone, like the DJI FPV.

This new model, baptized “Avata”, would weigh 500 grams, a detail that is important: in some countries, you have to declare to the administration if you have a drone that exceeds a certain weight. The particularity of this drone is that it would be suitable for indoor flights, with protections for the propellers to reduce the unfortunate consequences of a crash.

DJI is taking a deep dive into the “cinewhoop” trend that started a year ago with this impressive video shot inside a bowling alley in Minneapolis. Pilot Jay Byrd Christensen flew a drone in brilliant fashion, which helped create a new market for small, fast and very stable drones.

These drones are driven by pilots who “see” what the drone is filming with the help of a dedicated headset. Hence the term FPV for ” first person view » or « first person view “. The DJI FPV comes with a headset that has a 120 degree field of view with 120 frames per second video transmission.

The Avata should be able to record the same type of video as that of Jay Byrd Christensen, without having to tinker like the filmmaker-pilot had done. This drone should be released in July or August.
