District of Emmendingen, Freiburg: Federal government approves funding for the communal section of the RS 6 Freiburg-Waldkirch / Emmendingen – Green Landtag member Schoch: “Plans for the Breisgau cycle route are picking up speed.”

An important rapid cycle connection promoted by the state of Baden-Württemberg has now reached another milestone. After various planning and preparatory work by the state and the city of Freiburg, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure has now bindingly promised its funding for the section in the construction load of the city of Freiburg. This means that the BMVI will support the planning of the entire rapid cycle connection between Freiburg and its northern neighboring communities in the coming years.

Alexander Schoch: “The high-speed cycle route RS 6 from Freiburg to Waldkirch and Emmendingen is a lighthouse project. Freiburg is a bicycle city. The Freiburg area is, like all of Baden-Württemberg, a commuter country. This shows our commuter rate of 60 percent, which is above the national average of 40 percent. Two good reasons to rethink mobility in Breisgau. Over a length of 26 kilometers with a generous width, people will in future cycle on the RS 6 quickly, safely and directly to their work and training place. I would like to thank the planners of the Freiburg Regional Council and the City of Freiburg for their commitment. The task now is to find sections that can be implemented at an early stage. “

In order to offer everyday cyclists and commuters an attractive alternative to the car, a high-speed cycle path is to connect the cities of Waldkirch and Emmendingen via Denzlingen with Freiburg in the near future. The aim is to relieve heavily frequented streets and public transport connections and make an active contribution to climate protection. In mid-November, the city of Freiburg im Breisgau submitted the funding application for the approximately five-kilometer section of the route in its own urban area to the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). The federal government has now approved 570,000 euros (75 percent) for planning the municipal section of RS 6. The total costs for the planning of the section in the Freiburg urban area amount to 760,000 euros. The city of Freiburg pays a contribution of 190,000 euros (25 percent). Thanks to federal financial aid, the city of Freiburg, as the building contractor, can now start planning the route on its own.

The independent, continuous and wide route of the cycle superhighway should enable fast and safe progress and thus make it easier for commuters in particular to switch to the environmentally friendly means of transport. “What we need are comfortable and safe alternatives to motor vehicle traffic that enable a real change in traffic. Our goal is for people to cycle as many distances as possible in Breisgau in their everyday life, thereby noticeably reducing car traffic. With the RS 6 we are setting an important example for sustainable mobility. We are grateful for the support of the federal government in this project and look forward to the commitment of our project partners ”, said the Freiburg government president Bärbel Schäfer.

Schoch adds: “According to the amended Baden-Württemberg Road Act, the RS 6 cycle expressway is classified as a state road, the responsibility of which is the responsibility of the municipality in the case of municipalities with more than 30,000 inhabitants. For this reason, the application for funding was submitted separately from the already approved application by the state for the approximately 21-kilometer section from the city limits of Freiburg to Waldkirch and Emmendingen. The Freiburg Regional Council plans and builds this section on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. “

The planning costs around 1.4 million euros. The Federal Ministry of Transport is contributing around 1.1 million euros of this. According to the funding application, the planning and planning approval for the entire route should be completed by mid-2026. The aim is to complete the RS 6 by 2028 at the latest. It is checked whether parts can be brought forward and implemented more quickly.

Background information on cycle superhighways:

Cycle expressways are characterized by:
– At least five kilometers total distance
– Mostly four meters wide
– Inter-communal, largely crossing-free connection
– Priority guidance for cyclists
– Important connection for everyday cycling: at least 2,000 cyclists in 24 hours on most of the total route.

Cycle superhighways are particularly attractive due to the direct tours with few stops and large widths, especially over longer distances. Due to the increasing use of e-bikes and pedelecs, they have great potential to relieve the main traffic axes on roads and rails, avoid traffic jams and contribute to air pollution. In the case of cycle superhighways, the average speed of travel is increased by the fact that cyclists have to stop and wait less often thanks to non-crossing or preferential tours.
