The Disney family is in mourning! Ugandan actress Nikita Pearl Waligwa died on Saturday February 15 at TMR International Hospital in Naalya, Uganda, from a brain tumor. She was just 15 years old. Diagnosed for the first time in 2016, the young actress was in remission a year later.
The young artist was revealed in 2016 in the film Queen of Katwe, produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by the Indian director Mira Nair (The monsoons wedding, Vanity Fair: the vanity fair). There she played Gloria, the best friend of Phiona Mutesi, a young chess prodigy from the Ugandan slums. The mother of this chess genius was then embodied by Lupita Nyong’o, while David Oyelowo played his teacher. During the first diagnosis, Mira Nair had raised funds to finance the treatment of the girl in India. But in 2018, a new tumor appeared. “His brain was swollen and therefore exerted strong pressure,” told his relatives to the media.
At the same time as her career, Nikita Pearl Waligwa continued her education in the secondary school for young girls of Gayaza in Uganda.
