Usually, Disney regularly releases some of its most iconic movies in 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray versions. However, in the list of the next planned Blu-Ray, we only find Mom I missed the plane and Hocus Pocus, very unusual thing. The rumor had therefore started to swell that Disney would favor Disney+, and it is finally TheDigitalBits who confirmed it.
Partial and calculated abandonment
Disney would therefore have given up on the idea of releasing all of the titles in its catalog on 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray, a decision that would not be linked solely to the coronavirus crisis. However, this stop of very high quality releases is not absolute, since it does not concern Disney and Pixar animated films, nor Marvel and Star Wars. This decision therefore only affects live-action films produced by Disney, and especially all films in the catalog of 20th Century Fox. It will therefore always be possible for fans to get their favorite films in Blu-Ray 4K Ultra HD.
The interest of this stopping of the releases does not therefore lie so much in a potential low profitability, but indeed because this selling point will be for Disney more interesting elsewhere. Indeed, the Disney + streaming platform offers its films in 4K quality, and the firm therefore wishes to redirect viewers wishing to re-watch films like Fight Club or French Connection to this one.
This strategy of promoting Disney + is not only found in this decision. Disney’s strategy for the future therefore seems to be centered around Disney +. A bet that could pay off.
