Disney Delays Postponing Release Again Mulan August 21

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Disney again delayed the release of the film Mulan for the third time. This time, Mulan, which was originally scheduled to be released on July 24, retreated to August 21, 2020.

“While the pandemic has changed our plans regarding the release of Mulan and we will continue to be flexible in following the situation, this does not change our belief in the strength of this film and its message of hope and persistence,” said Disney’s co-chairman and Chief Creative Officer Alan Horn and co-chief chairman Alan Bergman in his statement.

“Director Niki Caro and our cast and cast have created a beautiful, epic and moving film, which should be a cinematic experience, and that’s where we believe it is, on a world stage and wide screen for audiences around the world to enjoy,”

The delay of Mulan’s release came after Warner Bros. delayed the screening of Tenet, a science fiction film by Christopher Nolan for both of you.

The film, starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, is now scheduled for release on 12 August.

Variety reported that Disney’s decision to delay Mulan could not be separated from the timetable schedule of Tenet. As a result of Tenet’s decision, Mulan became the first major film expected to bring the audience back to the cinema.

While Nolan is a major supporter of film screenings in theaters, a source in the film industry said that Disney did not want Mulan to become a trial case for screening new films during the pandemic.

Cinemas across the country have previously been closed for the past six months to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The giant cinema network in the United States, such as AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, plans to re-open their cinemas in July. But the certainty of the audience coming back is still unclear.

Meanwhile, the Mulan film made with a budget of up to US $ 200 million is expected to have maximum performance in China. But the cinema in the biggest international box office market was still closed without re-opening clarity.

With such conditions and Mulan’s closeness to the Chinese community, Variety assessed that it would be very risky for Disney to continue showing the film without considering the situation in China.

Previously the official film premiere gala Mulan was held in Los Angeles on March 10 in the United States. The event was still held grandly even though a number of international performances were postponed and even canceled due to the corona virus outbreak.

The premiere gala was attended by all the cast of Mulan starting from Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Jet Li, Nelson Lee, Jun Yu, Jimmy Wong, Doua Moua, Ron Yuan, Rosalind Chao, and Tzi Ma.

In the gala, the Mulan live-action film was welcomed by the audience and critics. The film is even called one of Disney’s best live-action adaptations.

“Mulan is Disney’s best live action after Cinderella. I didn’t even forget the song. Discovering new things in the story that we already know while providing extraordinary action and humor,” said critic Angie J. Han of LA Film Critics.
