Discovery of Five Bodies on Campus at Prima Indonesia University (Unpri) Medan Raises Concerns About Cadaver Use in Medical Practice

Exciting about it discovery of five bodies on campus Prima Indonesia University (Unpri) Medan. Unpri Medan stated that the bodies were cadaver or cadaver used for practicum by medical students.

Previously, a video went viral of the discovery of a body on the 9th floor of the Unpri Medan campus. The police also carried out an investigation into the veracity of the video by conducting a search of the campus location and finding 5 bodies.

Regarding the discovery of bodies on campus, this was revealed by the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prima Indonesia University (Unpri) Medan, Colonel (Purn) Susanto. He clarified, the corpse at Unpri Medan is cadaver.

Apa Itu Cadaver (Kadaver)?

According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), cadaver or in Indonesian it is called cadaver is corpse or dead body. Cadavers, namely corpses or corpses, are usually used by medical students for anatomy practicum.

Meanwhile, according to English-Indonesian Legal Terminology, cadaver or cadaver is defined as the body of a dead human or animal. Meanwhile, according to the Big Dictionary of Science, the definition of cadaver is a preserved human corpse.

Rules for the Use of Cadavers

The use of cadavers for science is regulated in Law (UU) Number 36 of 2009 concerning Health. Article 120 Paragraph (1) states, “For the purposes of education in the field of medical and biomedical sciences, anatomical post-mortems can be carried out in teaching hospitals or medical educational institutions.”

Apart from that, the rules regarding the use of cadavers or corpses for anatomical surgery practicum have also been regulated in Government Regulation (PP) Number 18 of 1981, with amendments namely PP Number 53 of 2021 concerning Transplantation of Organs and Body Tissues.

Regarding anatomical post-mortems, it is stated in Article 1 PP Number 18 of 1981. It states “Anatomical post-mortems are examinations carried out by dissecting corpses for educational purposes in the field of medical science.”

Then in Article 5 it is stated that for an anatomical post-mortem a corpse is required to be obtained from a hospital taking into account the conditions as intended in Article 2 letters a and c. Cadavers may only be carried out in the following circumstances:

  • With the written consent of the sufferer and/or his/her closest family after the sufferer dies, if the cause of death cannot be determined with certainty;
  • Without the consent of the patient or his immediate family, if within a period of 2 x 24 hours no immediate family of the deceased comes to the hospital.

Article 6 of the regulation also states that anatomical post-mortems can only be carried out in the anatomy ward of a medical faculty. Article 7 states that anatomical post-mortems are carried out by medical faculty students and medical graduates under the direct leadership and responsibility of an anatomist.

The prohibited acts, as regulated in Articles 17-19, are prohibited from buying and selling human organs and/or body tissues, and sending and receiving human organs and/or tissues in all forms to and from abroad is prohibited. However, this prohibition does not apply to scientific research and other purposes determined by the Minister of Health.
