The photographer Joséphine Vallé Franceschi was selected for the Meetings of young international photography in Niort. His poetic and surreal pictures are exhibited until May 28. Meet.

How do we appreciate the work of a photographer? His shoteye, his technique, his compositions. Joséphine Vallé Franceschi has a bit of all that. This young artist was selected for the Rencontres of young international photography in Niort, where his work is to discover until May 28 at L’Îlot sauvage.

His trademark is superimposition: a juxtaposition of images at the time of shooting. The photographer explains how she proceeds. “I take a first photo. I block the shot in the camera, I take one over it. Suddenly, there is this vaporous side that is created in my work”.

A technique that requires the use of a silver camera and film. A return to the past that pleases Joséphine Vallé Franceschi. “It’s a camera that I use quite often because it suits my work well. I like to work on the differences in film and chroma. I navigate with several different films”.

The fact that there are 36 shots in a roll means that we do not take a photo for nothing

In residence in Niort, she transforms the city through her lens. Sepia-toned landscapes and bodies appear. This is one of the charms of film photography: being surprised by what the negative will reveal. “We don’t know what we’re going to have and after the grain makes it much more beautiful, the film. The fact that there are 36 shots in a roll means that we don’t take a photo for nothing. We think every time we take a photo. That’s also what I’m looking for, that not everything is under control. That’s the beauty of film photography.”concludes Joséphine Vallé Franceschi.

His photos are exhibited until May 28 at L’île sauvage in Niort. Initially (until April 30), the public will be able to discover the photos that won them their selection at the Rencontres. The second part of the exhibition will be devoted to his work during his artistic residency in Niort.
