Thus comes the time to enjoy nature and, for this, we propose 9 routes in Burgos, for all levels, that you cannot miss. From the best waterfalls to gorges that will leave you with your mouth open. In this selection we have included some trails in which water is the protagonist, therefore we recommend doing these routes in the rainy season, to be able to enjoy them in all their splendor. Senda del Ventanón
The routes in Burgos are endless and all of them hide places worth visiting. Our selection begins with the Senda del Ventanón. This road brings you closer to Ojo Guareña Natural Monument, the second largest cave complex on the Peninsula, and one of the ten largest in the world.
With about 11km of route, this circular route of easy difficulty allows you to enter the natural monument that the rock formations have created in this area. Plains with holm oaks, mountains, caves … And architectural remains and sanctuaries dating from prehistory. A route full of varied surprises with an impressive window open to the valley below.

San Zadornil, the New York of the woods
In the region of Las Merindades within the Montes Obarenes natural park we find the San Zadornil forest. As if from a great green metropolis in question, this area is known as the New York of the woods. An original experience to discover a city, with its streets and neighborhoods, full of nature, in which public transport exists in the form of normal or electric bicycles or horseback riding.
Numerous trails for cycling, riding or walking follow one another through this place. One of the most prominent is the one go through the forests of Artzena. 18km that lead to Villafría de San Zardonil in two different scenarios: the first passes through placid forests of the Sierra de Arzena and, the second, intricate trails that go up to Revillallanos.

Mount Hijedo trail
Between Burgos and Cantabria is one of the most important oak groves in Spain thanks to its extension and the great conservation of natural spaces, flora and fauna: Mount Hijedo. A natural space that can be known through a route of medium difficulty and 11km travel. This begins in Santa Gadea de Alfoz, south of the Ebro reservoir.
The path evokes the High Middle Ages, in which the area was known as ‘La Selva de Hijedo’, due to its leafiness and the belief that it was populated by terrible beasts. Over the years, the area was exploited to take advantage of oak wood. First, in the construction of ships and, later, for the production of coal destined for the ironworks. At present the area has recovered and you can enjoy this forest that has waterfalls, streams and ocher tones of autumn in all its splendor.

Ebro canyons
The Ebro opened a gap of more than 200 meters deep as it passed through Burgos and drew a beautiful landscape of gorges, canyons, steep banks and meanders. Vegetation reigns over the area of the river that divides the Cantabrian Mountains and the Castilian Plateau. This national park has about 46,000 hectares covered by the Ebro Nature Trail. An ideal place for routes in Burgos, since it accompanies the river along 930km and 42 stages.
Among these trails the Ebro Canyon Trail, which usually begins in Valdelateja. Approximately 17 kilometers that cross the river that has carved the canyon as it passes through the limestone massif of Las Loras. A route to perform on foot or by mountain bike in which you will enjoy the vegetation, the fauna and, above all, the heritage of the peoples that are in the area.

Mataviejas gorge
Between Ura and Castroceniza find the Mataviejas gorge. A unique natural space that the river that gives this gorge its name has eroded over the years, forming rocky walls where birds reign. This route of only 5.6 kilometers takes place along the river and ends at the River mouth in the Arlanza. Along the walk, you can see the fruit of erosion that has given rise to a multitude of curious geomorphological formations.
If you choose to enjoy this route, a visit to the church of Our Lady of Castroceniza, from the 15th century, and which still preserves the arches dating from the 13th century.

Las Pisas Forest and Waterfall
The Las Pisas waterfall It is one of the most famous places in Las Merindades and one of the most surprising waterfalls in Burgos. In the north of the province of Burgos is this route, one of the most famous in the area, since it is close to Puentedey and the Ojo Guareña Nature Monument. Through it, you will enter a dense forest of beech, oak, hazelnut and holly worth enjoying in autumn. The most common entry to start this route is from Villabáscones de Valdebezana.
The waters of the La Gándara river form the Cascada de Las Pisas, the final point to which this path leads, where an impressive succession of stepped waterfalls can be found. With only 4km in length, counting the round trip, we are facing one of the simplest routes in Burgos and ideal for traveling with children.

Salto del Nervión
The Salto del Nervión is the highest waterfall in Spain, with more than 200 meters of fall and framed within the Natural Monument of Monte Santiago. Between Burgos and Álava, the bordering situation of the provinces has generated the eternal dispute over which of the two it belongs to. Of which there is no doubt, is that it is a An essential point to visit, whether you live or if you are passing through, in Burgos lands. In addition, it is advisable in times of thaw, snowfall or rain, in order to appreciate the jet in its full splendor.
The most popular route To get to the viewpoint from Burgos, it is 4 kilometers from Berberana, in the last parking lot. A simple and short route, of only 3.6 km round trip, to observe the great prize that is hidden at the end. But if you want to enjoy the road, you can make the 7km circular route, in which you will cross a beech forest and the Senda del Cortado.

The Neila Lagoons, in the heart of the Sierra de la Demanda, are a set of glacial lagoons that touch 2,000 meters in height. East natural park consists of 7 lagoons, among which the Laguna Larga and the Laguna Negra stand out due to their easy access. A classic environment for routes in Burgos
In the area you can find different trails depending on the difficulty. The most classic is Alto de la Campiña circular route from which one of the best views of the area, ascending to the summit of the Campiña. For the most daring, the Las Calderas route it goes a step further than the previous one, until it reaches a canyon with rock formations that houses waterfalls and natural pools of fascinating colors. The third is one of the most complete and simple trails in this area. From the Circular Trail of the Neila Lagoons You will get to know the landscape in depth: you will enjoy from the top of the lagoons and the best views of the highest peaks.

Purón river gorge
The last of the Burgos routes of our selection is in the Merindades region. The gorges are the protagonists in the Purón river path. Following in the footsteps of the Roman legions, this ancient road joins the Tobalina valley, in Burgos, and the Valderejo Natural Park, in Álava. The Purón River has sculpted this gorge over the years.
The length of the route will depend on the return itinerary. It can vary from 10.4km to 7.8km. In any case, it will depart from the town of Herrán, in the region of Las Merindades. Along the way we will find surprising spaces. Among them, the Las Puentes Canyon, an ancient Roman bridge that goes through this point. Further on, embedded in the rocks, is the hermitage of San Felices and San Roque. Architectural constructions with hundreds of years old that will amaze along the forest and the gorge.
