Li Kunhi, chairman of Samsung’s board, has died

Li Kunhi was the third son of Samsung’s founder and chairman of the board, Li Buncun. He took over as chairman of the council after his father’s death in 1987. Since then, Samsung has become the world’s largest manufacturer of smartphones and memory cards.

Li Kunhi was twice sentenced to suspended prison terms – in 1996 for giving bribes to presidents and in 2009 for tax evasion. In both cases, he was pardoned a year after his sentence.

In 2008, Li resigned as chairman of Samsung’s board of directors on charges of tax evasion, but it was believed that he was in fact continuing to run the company. In 2010, he returned to the position of the chairman of the council.

Since Li Kunhi was in a coma after a heart attack in 2014, the actual manager of the company is his son, Deputy Chairman of the Council, Li Jehon.
