Grey Sculptural Expansion Unveiled for The Broad Museum in Los Angeles

Exciting development for Los Angeles architecture

New York architecture studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro has revealed stunning images of a grey, sculptural expansion for The Broad museum in Los Angeles, marking a major milestone in the city’s architectural scene. With Diller Scofidio + Renfro having created the original museum nearly a decade ago, this expansion serves as a testament to their architectural prowess.

Complementing the existing structure

The 55,000-square-foot expansion, located adjacent to The Broad, will feature additional art galleries, storage, performance space, and two open-air courtyards. The designs showcase a rectangular building elevated above a plaza, with curved-edge windows that create a visually stunning effect. The goal of this expansion is to seamlessly blend with the current structure while maintaining its own unique character and purpose.

Partnership and purpose

Partner Elizabeth Diller describes the new building as a companion to the existing Broad, noting that while they share DNA, each has its own distinct character and purpose. This harmonious relationship between the two structures fosters a constant and dynamic dialogue.

A masterpiece in concept and form

The concept behind the expansion is derived from the “veil” and “vault” concept of the original museum. This new building echoes the appearance of the “vault” and symbolically expresses The Broad’s commitment to accessibility. By skillfully inverting the visual vocabulary of the current building, Diller Scofidio + Renfro have crafted a monument to contemporary art.

Beyond aesthetics

The expansion will offer art galleries across three floors, providing a dynamic space for the museum’s extensive collection. The inclusion of second-floor storage racks promises to showcase additional artworks, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a captivating journey through art. This project will honor the intuitive circulation of the original Broad, prioritizing transitional areas and ensuring a seamless experience for visitors. Notably, an outdoor plaza located around the expansion will strengthen the museum’s connection to a local metro station.

Embracing a bright future

Construction for the expansion is set to commence in 2025, with an expected completion date of 2028. The team aims to finish the project before Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics, adding to the excitement surrounding this remarkable development. With its commitment to contemporary art and innovative design, The Broad’s grey sculptural expansion is poised to become an iconic landmark in Los Angeles.
