Dikes Limburg still hold, but new floods Germany and Austria


Bavaria hit hard

Last night and tonight, other parts of Germany were also hit by flooding and flooding as a result of extreme precipitation. The southern state of Bavaria has been badly hit. Two people have died in the Berchtesgadener Land region, but according to news agency DPA it is still unclear whether this was a direct result of a flood.

Hundreds of rescue workers have been deployed in the area; dozens of people have been evacuated. According to German media, this happened in particular in the places Bischofswiesen, Schönau am Königssee, Marktschellenberg and Ramsau. There are also reports of evacuations, floods and landslides in the Munich region.

One hundred millimeters of rain in Saxony

In the eastern state of Saxony, there were floods Saturday evening after more than 100 millimeters of rain had fallen in less than 24 hours. By way of comparison: an average of 75 millimeters falls in the Netherlands throughout the month of July.

The affected region in Saxony is located about thirty kilometers southeast of Dresden. Some places in the hilly area are no longer accessible, the local authorities report. There is a warning of severe flooding due to extremely high water in the Kirnitzsch, Sebnitz and Lachsbach rivers. No casualties have been reported here so far.

Major damage in Austria

Also in neighboring Austria there is now significant flooding. Chancellor Kurz speaks on Twitter of major damage in many places.

In Hallein, near Salzburg, there was severe flooding on Saturday evening. The heavy rain turned a stream into a swirling stream of water. This can also be seen in this video:
