Digital Foundry: Nintendo has canceled the Switch update – Gaming – News

I think you are underestimating the fact that many (maybe even most) parents today were or are (once) gamers. Today’s parents are kids from the 80s and 90s. Kids who grew up with a NES, SNES, Megadrive and PSOne.

Of course, there’s also a group that doesn’t get it (yet). But the Wii to WiiU transition fiasco already happened 10 years ago!. This is another demographic. And Switch -> Switch 2 is easier to sell than say Wii (U). And the WiiU was backward compatible.

I understand the hustle and also why they didn’t do a midlife update like with the DS -> DSi. Or especially from the 3DS to the “new” 3DS. The latter had little added value, but could be made more expensive. And certainly with the numbers they’re selling at now, an upgrade and possible market split is a risk. Only 6 games unique to that system were released for the “new” 3DS.

And yes, there is less demand from the “hardcore” group than Xbox One X –> PS4Pro. There are fewer people who necessarily want a few more frames and have a VRR TV. Or who wants 1440p instead of 1080. Many (shovelware) manufacturers won’t want to invest in these extra optimizations into better resources or an extra quality profile. But on the other hand: Don’t forget how many “hardcore” gamers still have a Switch for a game of Mariokart, Smash or Splatoon. Or you want to go on an epic adventure in Zelda, Mario or Xenoblade Triangle Tactics. Either way, they will still buy those (big) stocks…
