Digital Foundry compares all modes of DIRT 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X | S – Gambling addiction

Digital Foundry continues to quietly explore the first games for the next generation of consoles. Experts analyzed today DIRT 5 на PS5 и Xbox Series X|S.

Studying the race is quite interesting, since there are three performance modes for each console at once.

Picture

In this mode, improved detail of the world with improved quality of shadows and shading, as well as increased drawing distance of objects.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions run in dynamic 4K with a 1440p low bar. At the same time, PS5 has increased texture filtering, on average, higher resolution and performance against the background of the Xbox Series X, which can lose up to 8 frames per second in complex scenes.

Xbox Series S runs at dynamic 1440p, dropping below 1080p. On average, it rarely shows anything above 1080p. In general, this is the weakest nextgen version – it looks and works worse than its older counterparts. Overall, the Series S is performing well.

In this case, all versions have tearing when frames fall. On PS5 it is less common, but seems to be more noticeable.

Resolution

This mode simplifies the graphics but increases the overall resolution. The Series X and PS5 versions are getting closer to native 4K, while the Series S version is still around 1080p.

All three consoles in this mode have the best performance – in the vast majority of scenes, they work without problems at 60 frames per second.

Graphically, the Series S version, in addition to simplifying shadows, shading and reducing draw distance, also reduces grass detail.

Performance (120 FPS)

In this mode, on older consoles, the race runs in resolutions from 900p to 1440p, while the Xbox Series S drops even lower – up to 570p.

More surprisingly, the graphics on the PS5 are much better than on both Xbox models, from car detailing and object geometry to tessellation, textures and grass. The difference is so big that DF considered it a bug and reported it to the developers.

Comparisons of graphics in 120 FPS mode between PS5 and Xbox Series X:

However, everything is not so simple: on some tracks, performance on the PS5 is extremely unstable, with drops up to 90 frames per second. Since the console does not support variable frame rates, these drops are extremely unpleasant.

On Xbox Series X, everything seems to be fine here – it holds 120 FPS much better.

Where does the difference between the Xbox Series X and PS5 come from? As Digital Foundry once again noted, Microsoft has now completely changed the Xbox development environment with the arrival of DirectX 12 Ultimate, where the common tools are for the Xbox Series, Xbox One and PC.

Some developers did not have time to spend a lot of time and get acquainted with it, while the PS5 environment remained almost identical to the PS4. No need to retrain.

In addition, it has been reported on multiple occasions that Sony’s APIs give lower-level access to console resources, while Microsoft’s current API is more computer-like.
