How to tell the difference?
The symptoms of monkeypox and chickenpox in humans are almost similar, but the symptoms of monkeypox are milder than the symptoms of smallpox. The main difference in the symptoms is that monkeypox causes swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy), whereas chickenpox does not.
Then, the initial symptoms of monkeypox fever are usually high reaching 38 C and then followed by a rash that appears 1-3 days. Meanwhile, chickenpox and measles are also followed by high fever and rash on days 2-4.
The spread of monkeypox is arguably slower than chickenpox and measles, where it takes 3-4 weeks to spread. Meanwhile, chickenpox can spread easily between humans.
Not only that, although it is easily contagious, usually the chickenpox virus will not cause any serious disease. Symptoms can improve within 4-7 days. However, monkeypox can last much longer, about 2–4 weeks. In fact, monkeypox has caused death in 1 in 10 people who contracted the virus.
