The human body consists of various kinds of cells. In order to survive such as making new tissue, breathing, digesting food, and so on, these cells consistently make protein. Instructions for making this protein are given to a messenger called messenger RNA. This messenger or mRNA then provides information to a protein-making machine called a ribosome which reads the code sequence in the mRNA and then controls the protein production in great detail. About three decades ago, scientists realized that if we could make mRNA in the laboratory, it could be that this mRNA could be injected into the body, then stimulate the production of proteins that can fight various diseases including cancer and also respiratory infections.
