Dieter Hallervorden provokes with new music: “For me, gender is a martyrdom”

Berlin – “Old White Knacker”: Dieter Hallervorden publishes new music at the age of 86 and is not afraid to provoke.

His new album “80 plus” will be released on November 5th and could be a topic of conversation. It’s about getting older, about love rockets and gender-equitable language. But also, and that’s a particularly nice part, about the appreciation of life.

When you’ve met Hallervorden in the past few years, he often seemed full of energy. Sneakers on my feet, my hair a little disheveled. He was just on stage at Florian Silbereisen’s (40) show “Schlagerboom”. There he appeared with his new song “Mein Leben”, which is a little reminiscent of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”.

“My life, you weren’t a pony farm”, the cabaret artist sings to the piano accompaniment. “I provoked as a clown and as a philosopher. I circled around God. Around the ancient tower. And I don’t know whether as a falcon or a storm. You know, I live stormy and fast. As a dreamer, as a doer, fantasist and rebel. “

Hallervorden – the doer, fanatic and rebel. In the 1970s he became known for television chains, later he made films such as “His Last Race” and “Honey in the Head”. During the pandemic, Hallervorden is committed to culture and his Berlin Schlosspark Theater, which he has been running for several years.

The album sounds like a mixture of life review and après-ski. In the song “80 plus” he sings about getting older (“You were a womanizer, but there’s not much left. The years have gambled away your sex appeal”).

In a song he criticizes the efforts to make women appear more in the language. “For me, gender is martyrdom,” it says, for example. Or: “Do I have to call the tap a tap now?”

“I am a friend of justice. When it comes to gendering, I feel sorry for mother tongue and father tongue. Their sound is so beautiful, it is tricky, is indicated by asterisks, dots and lines … (beep),” sings Hallervorden.

His prognosis: it will never work out with gender. Later he sings: “I know, I’m an old white geezer, but still a sexy motherfucker in the pear.”

A song is dedicated to getting married. Marriage sometimes reminds him of pasta salad, it says, “first it tastes delicious, then it becomes bland”. Marriage enforces “a celibate dementia”.

Towards the end, Hallervorden puts some of the sentences into perspective again. Marriage works where friendship wins. In the song “Stuntfrau” he sings about love. His partner Christiane Zander can also be heard – and of course, she was once a stunt woman.

You could argue about some of the songs, and that’s probably how it should be. What makes the music quite comforting after all are the serious tones. When Hallervorden sings about death, for example. Or from his life.

“You taught me to float above everything,” it says or also: “My life, I owe you a thank you. If I have my way, it can go on forever.”
