Diet High in Processed Foods Linked to Alzheimer’s: New Study

Imagine eating a juicy burger with a side of fries and a bottle of juice. Sure, it’s absolute heaven. But would you still eat it if you knew that these types of foods lead to serious neurological health risks?

Why junk food leads to Alzheimer’s

Unfortunately, a diet high in meat and processed foods is strongly linked to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Scientists at Australia’s Bond University discovered this “strong correlation” by studying the eating habits of 438 people. Of this group, 108 participants were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and the rest did not have the condition.

The researchers reached their conclusion after performing statistical analysis using data from the Australian Imaging Biomarker and Lifestyle Study of Aging, according to a statement about the research. Basically, they tracked what the participants ate to determine any link to developing Alzheimer’s later.

In general, Alzheimer’s patients tended to eat a diet high in “processed foods and meat products.” The foods they regularly ingested included beef, meat pies, sausages, ham, hamburgers, and pizza.

What scientists say

Compared to the healthy group, they also tended to eat less fruit and vegetables – and, intriguingly, drank wine at lower rates too.

The study appears to be a warning: Eating a decadent diet high in processed meat could cause serious problems later on.

This study is part of a growing body of research showing that what we eat can impact the development of dementia or Alzheimer’s later in life.

It’s possible that this consumption of fatty and processed foods increases inflammation and oxidation inside our bodies, causing the brain to not function as it should. Or there could be another mechanism that is not yet understood, as an explanation for Alzheimer’s disease itself is still a mystery to doctors. And researchers are also trying to see if the makeup of our gut biome could influence the trajectory of our brain health.
