Did the Belgians respect confinement? What telecom data say

It appears from the monitoring of telecom data by the task force “Data Against Corona” of Minister Philippe De Backer that the Belgians are slowly but surely starting to move again. The confinement was however generally well respected, said his cabinet on Friday in a press release.

After the introduction of confinement, the population quickly adapted to the restrictions and scrupulously respected them, notes the task force. The anonymized data of the telecom operators thus show that between the beginning and the end of March, the average of trips outside his commune fell by more than half: from 2.25 on average to 1.1 trips per day per inhabitant.

New data analyzes now indicate a slight increase in the number of trips outside the postal code. Between the beginning and the end of April, the average daily travel per inhabitant thus slightly increased from 1.1 to 1.29, an increase of about 17%. “It seems that the desire to relax the restrictive measures is growing,” concludes De Backer.

Given the new phase of the epidemic in which Belgium has entered, the task force is consolidating its analyzes. “We are only continuing certain telecom analyzes to use them in the development of predictive models for the epidemic, in collaboration with the best Belgian model makers, data scientists and epidemiologists of the GEES. This will allow the government to know more quickly when and where the epidemic could start again “, specifies Mr. De Backer again.
