Did not receive support after birth

The Guardian reports on Saturday about a shocking incident from 2019, concerning a birth in Bronzefield prison in the UK in Ashford.

The British newspaper has been given access to records from the prison and probation officer, who say that an 18-year-old woman was not offered grief support after losing her baby.

The teenager is said to have undergone the birth alone in the prison cell on September 26, two years ago. She must have fainted during the birth, and when she woke up the baby was dead.

It must have taken twelve hours from the birth was underway, until she received assistance from the guards in Bronzefield.

In retrospect, the guards who failed to help her are said to have been offered grief support, but it was not offered to the grieving 18-year-old.

– Attempted buried

According to The Guardian, the details have been tried to be buried in a report from prison, which was published last week. It describes how the teenager was found in bed, rocking her dead baby in her arms.

It further states that it took more than twelve hours from when she first tried to contact the staff of the privately owned prison, until she received assistance. During the birth, she is said to have asked for help three times, without anyone doing anything.

It also appears that the guards, who are said to have ignored her request, are still working in the prison.

The woman who lost her newborn baby was in prison for the first time. She was remanded in custody, charged with robbery.

Fainted

The 18-year-old woman is said to have gone into labor once in the evening in her cell two years ago. At 23 she was in constant pain and could not get to the alarm on the cell.

Shortly after that, the woman must have fainted, and then woke up with the baby, lying dead in front of her. She is then said to have bitten through the umbilical cord and tried to wipe the blood from the cell before she got to bed with the baby.

Despite overnight checks by guards who went round the jail, the baby’s death was only discovered after two prisoners sounded the alarm.

A nurse was called, but she was unable to resuscitate the child.

The staff was later offered support from external advisers. It was not the 18-year-old, who had just undergone a traumatic experience.

Prison and probation officer Sue McAllister, who has written the report, has reported that Bronzefield’s birth offer is both outdated and inadequate.

This is now being highlighted in the British media, to prevent such an incident from happening again.
