After the departure by Covid-19 of the Liberian teacher Manuel Chamorro at the age of 86, last Thursday, September 23, many friends, acquaintances and renowned Costa Rican musicians gave their last goodbye to the so-called Costa Rican pampa troubadour, famous for his exalted interpretation of the bolero “Luna Liberiana” by Jesús Bonilla.
About Chamarro, there are few Costa Rican artists who have traveled the world singing on the main stages, especially after leaving aside the profession of doctor for a guitar, he even worked on cruise ships as an official artist for many years.
His privileged voice sounded on stages such as the OTI International Festival, where he represented Costa Rica on two occasions, the one in 1983 in Washington DC one of the most remembered, because he interpreted the song of his authorship “Gracias, amor” accompanied by the great musician Costa Rican Carlos Guzmán.
In August 2016, he was one of the artists honored on National Artist Day, which was held, on that occasion, in the Hall of Ex-Presidents of the Legislative Assembly.
ABOUT “LUNA LIBERIANA”
“Luna Liberiana” is a Costa Rican song written by the composer Jesús Bonilla Chavarría and premiered on February 14, 1936. In Costa Rica it is considered the most emblematic bolero of the Guanacaste pampa, as the province of Guanacaste is known, and one of the most recognizable songs of the national folklore. It has been recorded and performed by countless Costa Rican and foreign artists and musicians, such as Plácido Domingo on November 14, 2008. On February 9, 2011, on the occasion of its author’s birthday, “Luna Liberiana” was declared the official hymn of the canton of Liberia.
COVID-19 HAS HIT NATIONAL FARAND
The loss of Don Manuel Chamorro by Covid-19 in the last hours joins others that have unfortunately impacted the national show business in the last year, due to the pandemic that overwhelms the whole world, as has been the case of Alberto Chacón Zumbado, known as “Naranjito”, at 59 years of age on May 5. Also the contest producers Alejandro Rojas Calderón and José Vásconez, 32 and 33 years old, respectively. Also Alejandro Oviedo, a journalist for the Club Sport Herediano.
“Liberian Moon”
Oh divine moon!
that illuminates our land.
Unfathomable mystery
that confuses our souls.
The star comes out,
between clouds,
mysterious and dark
Oh divine moon!
that illuminate our souls.
Liberian moon, moon to love,
mysterious nights,
what a drunkenness of love.
It’s a paradise
that the Creator gave us,
of beautiful women
who know how to love.
Liberian moon, moon to love,
I cry with pleasure under your mantle
and on quiet nights
when everything sleeps.
Liberian Moon I watch over you.
Liberian Moon
luna para amar
mysterious nights
that intoxicates us with love.
