The water in the IJssel is still rising and residents along the river are closely monitoring the level, including in Deventer. The quay along the river is already partly under water. This happens often, but flood barriers and sandbags have now also been placed to prevent water from flowing into the old city center.

This morning the water level was at 6.21 meters, while 6.30 meters is the critical point of flooding, says a spokesperson for the municipality of Deventer in the NOS Radio 1 News.

“Things are going really fast now,” he says. Deventer is working on an emergency plan to keep residents dry. People who live in other places near the water have also placed sandbags in front of their homes.

The emergency plan was already being worked on yesterday, because the water rose faster than expected. The peak is expected next night.

The rainfall is also visible in Drenthe, where the Drents Overijsselse Delta Water Board has its hands full combating the water. Canals and ditches are full, says a spokesperson for the Water Board RTV Drenthe.

Lots of rainfall

The high water levels are a result of the heavy rainfall recently, in combination with bad weather in Germany. The soil has therefore become saturated and it is difficult for the water to drain away.

The wind and storm Pia also play a role. For example, the water in the IJsselmeer is now almost one meter higher than normal. This is partly caused by the strong wind from the northwest, which pushes up the water of the Wadden Sea and hardly allows water to be discharged from the IJsselmeer into the Wadden Sea.

Despite the high water, safety is not at risk, reports the Union of Water Boards.

In addition to nuisance, high water also produces beautiful pictures:
