Devastating Earthquake in Morocco Leaves Over 2,000 Victims: Death Toll Expected to Rise

Moscow. 10 September. INTERFAX.RU – The number of victims of the earthquake in Morocco as of Sunday morning was 2012 people, another 2059 were injured, more than 1.4 thousand victims are in critical condition, according to a statement released by the Moroccan Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Previously it was reported that there were 1,305 dead and 1,832 injured. The bulk of the casualties occurred in the city of Marrakech and five provinces near the epicenter of the tremors.

At the same time, according to experts, the death toll may increase, since rescuers are not yet able to reach hard-to-reach areas. Morocco’s King Mohammed VI mobilized army search and rescue teams to search for and rescue any survivors using helicopters and drones.

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred late Friday evening. Its epicenter lay, according to various sources, at a depth of 11 km to 18 km in the Atlas Mountains, approximately 70 km south of Marrakech. The earthquake was the strongest to hit Morocco in 120 years, and such natural disasters are relatively rare in North Africa.
