In mid-September, Cuba announced that it had detained seventeen people who were recruiting young Cubans to go fight for Russia in Ukraine. For desperate young men, enlistment was one hope for a better life. In addition, not everyone realized what they had actually signed up for and thought that they had gone to Russia to work as workers. Others claim that they wanted to escape from Cuba to avoid starvation.
