They went after a ball to the foot of the Eiffel bridge but ended up surprised by the rising tide in Viana do Castelo.
Two youths aged 15 to 18 were rescued by a recreational boat on the Lima River, at the request of the police, after more than half an hour trapped on one of the platforms of the bridge’s pedestals, the fire brigade source said. .
The warning was given at about 17:15, by a colleague of the two individuals, who was also in the river but managed to reach the shore, mobilizing teams of the Sapadores Firefighters of Viana do Castelo, of the Red Cross of São Romão do Neiva, of the captaincy of Maritime Police and PSP.
The young people were quite frightened, trying to climb the bridge in order to leave that platform, since the current would be too strong for them to swim back to the bank.
Upon the arrival of the PSP, the agents requested a recreational boat to rescue the young people, an operation that was successfully concluded.
Because they were in a state of hypothermia, the young people, including those who managed to reach the beach, all of whom lived in Darque, were transported to the Viana do Castelo Hospital.
Young people notified about the ban on leisure spaces
Speaking to the Lusa agency, Marcelino Costa, a Maritime Police agent, said that the young people were practicing an activity that is not allowed under the state of calamity decreed by the Government, following the covid-19 pandemic and that “will be notified of non-compliance with that standard ”.
The agent explained that “they will only be prosecuted if they repeat their practice”.
On Tuesday, the Viana do Castelo City Council renewed the ban on access to the municipality’s river and sea beaches.
A total of 13 operatives and five vehicles attended the site.
For the location, the PM mobilized two agents, an off-road vehicle and a semi-rigid motorboat that would eventually not be used.
