Despite lockdown, 39 new corona deaths in Shanghai

Since the start of the current outbreak in Shanghai, 48 people have died from the virus. So there were 39 more yesterday, an explosive increase. According to health authorities, the average age of the victims was around 80 years old. Many of them already had underlying suffering.

The significant increase comes despite the strict lockdown in the city. China has had a zero-covid policy since the start of the pandemic. It means that the 26 million inhabitants of Shanghai have not been allowed to leave their homes since the end of February. And not leaving your house really means not leaving your house in China.

RTL Nieuws correspondent Roland Smid shows that the strategy can lead to dangerous situations. Smith himself lives in Shanghai and has therefore been in quarantine for weeks.

In the video below you can see how the frustration among the residents of Shanghai is increasing. Access to food and drink is very poor, but complaints on social media are severely censored.
