“Design Walk” gathers more than 350 visitors in the Occupation / Article Museum

“Dizaina pastaiga” every year offers people the opportunity to look into the daily lives of the creators and users of design, thus providing a new perspective on design, its countless possibilities and omnipresent presence. Last year “Dzaina pastaiga” examined the design options to mitigate the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, but this year all the attention has been turned to the relationship between history and design. The walks held at the Latvian Occupation Museum attracted unprecedented interest from visitors – all eight walks were fully booked.

“It is very rare for designers to share their experience of the creation process in such an open and public way. I think this is one of the reasons that contributed to the interest of the visitors. Many have gone for walks several times, many have spent four or five hours in the museum listens, studies, acquires information and feels emotions. It is important to emphasize that we did not coordinate the content of the walks in the group. Just like in the work process, each of the walks complemented each other in terms of content as well. , giving visitors an idea of interdisciplinary cooperation in design “, said the leading designer of the design office” H2E “Ingun Eler.

At the end of the day, the exchange of ideas took place in the discussion “Design and history” led by playwright Laura Gundar, during which the affirmation was repeatedly heard that it is necessary to effectively communicate historical events in the name of a better future. In this context, the lack of a unified development strategy for museums was highlighted. Exhibits are a powerful tool for promoting understanding of historical events and characters not only locally, but also internationally, so museums should play a broader and more strategic role at the national level. Participants in the discussion also agreed that museums should be bolder in their actions and communication – this could potentially promote museum visits on a local scale.

The design walk is organized by the “SEGD Riga Chapter” design community and the “H2E” design office.

The next closing event of this year’s “SEGD Riga Chapter” will take place on 2 December: the “Design & Research” conference. It will discuss design studies that address responsibility, integrity and dignity and offer opportunities for sensory, emotional and cognitive experiences. The event will take place on a digital platform, in English for SEGD members and stakeholders.
