Dengue Fever Cases in East Java Expected to Reach Over 3,600 in 2024

Surabaya – The number of cases of dengue fever (DHF) in East Java will be more than 3,600 cases in early 2024. The most cases are in Probolinggo.

Based on data from the East Java Health Office, dengue fever cases in East Java in 2024 will increase compared to 2023. DHF cases throughout 2023 alone were 9,041.

“In 2023 there will be around 9,041 cases, until the third week of February alone there are 3,638, which means it’s not until the first quarter, right? So if you can predict it, for example three times there will be more than 9,000, so it could be at least almost the same or could exceed in 2023,” said the Head of the Prevention Section and Control of Infectious Diseases at the East Java Health Office, Drg Sulvi Anggraeni, Monday (4/2/2024).

Sulvi said that the highest dengue fever figure was in Probolinggo Regency with 600 cases in 2024. Meanwhile in Surabaya City there are currently more than 30 dengue fever cases.

“Alhamdulillah, Surabaya is still under control compared to several regencies and cities where there are quite a lot of cases, but it has started to increase,” he said.

Sulvi explained that based on trends, dengue cases do increase during the rainy season. Usually the increase occurs at the end or beginning of the year.

“Maybe the time shifts a little bit in terms of months, but the increase is more in the rainy season. Well, if we look at the weather, right now we can’t predict it like in previous years, right now the turn has increased a lot, but if we look at the size “yesterday, at the beginning of January, it was actually still flat, but suddenly it rose again in late January to February,” he explained.

Efforts to prevent dengue fever that can be carried out, said Sulvi, are implementing PSN (Mosquito Nest Eradication) 3M (Draining, Covering, Recycling) Plus. Then the dengue vaccine, dengue vaccine TAK-003 is produced by a joint company with Takeda from Japan. However, the vaccine is not yet a government program and can be obtained at personal expense.

“If people can afford it, please buy it. Because if you look at the price, it’s much cheaper than if we were sick with dengue fever in the hospital, yes, it’s much more expensive and that’s the people’s choice,” he said.

Sulvi emphasized that the Takeda dengue vaccine is safe. Apart from personal protection, it is also important to implement PSN 3M Plus.

“We from the health sector from the Ministry of Health and Provincial Health also support PSN 3M plus, vaccination continues,” he concluded.
