Democratic Party of Korea Members Announce Withdrawal and Formation of New Parties, Press Conferences and Plans for Political Coalitions Unfold

Representatives Kim Jong-min, Cho Eung-cheon, and Lee Won-wook, who left the Democratic Party of Korea, declared the creation of the ‘Grand Future Coalition’ (tentative name) on the 12th. They said, “To break down vested interest politics and move towards politics that will change the world, reform forces and future forces must unite in solidarity,” and “We will become a platform where all reform forces and future forces come together.”

Lee Nak-yeon, former leader of the Democratic Party, also announced ‘New Future’ (tentative name) as the name of the new party and said, “We will break down the extreme politics of the two major parties and work to realize a multi-party system and amend the constitution to normalize politics.”

As discussions on election solidarity and merger between third zone forces are in full swing, they appear to be trying to ‘bring the three together’ through a joint coalition.

On this day, Rep. Lee Won-wook, Kim Jong-min, and Cho Eung-cheon, together with former Justice Party Rep. Park Won-seok and former Grand National Party Rep. Jeong Tae-geun, formalized the creation of the ‘Grand Future Coalition’ at the National Assembly. Former lawmakers Park and Jeong formed the political innovation forum ‘With You’ and have been preparing to found a new party for the third zone. At the press conference, they said, “Neither the two vested political parties have any intention of reflecting or the will to change. “Korean politics has become a colosseum full of passion for shutting up and attacking and don’t ask questions,” he said, adding that he would seek solutions to new technologies and new industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), alternatives to inequality, and solutions to the climate crisis, population crisis, and local extinction. On the 14th, they will hold a party founding meeting at the National Assembly Hall and engage in a race for speed.

Former CEO Lee Nak-yeon’s ‘New Future’ is also planning to hold a separate party initiator competition at the Seoul Women’s Plaza International Conference Room in Dongjak-gu, Seoul on the 16th. Former Representative Lee Nak-yeon and Rep. Kim Jong-min and Cho Eung-cheon met somewhere in Seoul on the evening of the 11th to discuss ways to jointly hold a party founding promoters’ convention, but were reportedly unable to narrow their differences. It is reported that former representative Lee Nak-yeon did not accept the demand from some in the Future Coalition to retreat for a second term, such as not running in the presidential election. An official from the Future Coalition said, “Now, through each individual’s progress, we will fill our own resources and then work together.” Former leader Lee Nak-yeon also said, “We initially discussed working together from the preparation stage for the creation of a party, but we decided that we would not be able to keep pace up to this point.” He added, “Even if the preparation process for the formation of a party is different, in the end, the new party will be together.”

● Lee Jun-seok “Looking for the greatest common divisor”

Former leader Lee Nak-yeon again expressed his intention to actively stand in solidarity with former People Power Party leader Lee Jun-seok, who is pushing for the creation of the ‘New Reform Party’ (tentative name), saying, “We must work together.” Former Representative Lee Nak-yeon said on MBC Radio on the 12th, “(Former Representative Lee Jun-seok) has become a person who symbolizes youth politics, and although I am proud of him, isn’t he the representative of experienced politicians?” and “He could become a model for generational integration.” He said.

The Future Coalition also plans to focus on discussing new parties with the centrist camp, including former leader Lee Jun-seok, former lawmaker Geum Tae-seop’s New Choice, and lawmaker Yang Hyang-ja’s Hope for Korea for the time being. An official from the Future Coalition said, “Realistically, if only people from the Democratic Party gather together, the destructive power of the new party is not that great.”

Former CEO Lee Jun-seok appears to be trying to control the pace. On KBS Radio, he expressed solidarity with former leader Lee Nak-yeon, saying, “The public will not respond with the same level of approval if we want to blindly merge,” adding, “The talk of blindly merging and solidarity will not attract members of the party, and the public will not respond with the same level of approval rating.” “It is,” he emphasized. However, he kept the possibility of solidarity open, saying, “We will continue our efforts to find the greatest common divisor,” and “We will talk and meet with various entities without prejudice.” An official close to former leader Lee Jun-seok said in a phone call, “Throughout my time with the Bareunmirae Party, I experienced the difficulty of forming a chemical bond between disparate political forces. There is no need to rush with the flow and rush to establish a ‘big tent.’” Reporter Da-bin Yoon empty@ donga.com
