Demand for Peace and Political Solution in Gaza: Calls for Ceasefire and International Intervention

Peace as a standard. The ceasefire as a common cause. This Sunday morning, the Place du Mûrier in Toulon resonated with words as heavy as they were hopeful. Nearly 200 people responded to the call from four political groups (Europe Ecologie, PCF, La France Insoumise and Génération. s) and as many associations (Attac, Les Varois pour la peace et la justice en Méditerranée, the Ligue des Human Rights and The Peace Movement) so that the fighting in Gaza stops and a political solution is found.

Vengeance and barbarity

“The Hamas attack of October 7 is a despicable act of barbarity. But we also condemn with the same force the Israeli government which, in revenge, bombs Palestinian civilians”explains Pierre Daspre, secretary of the PCF departmental federation.

“It is time for Israel to finally respect the UN resolutions, continues Anne Chapotot, president of the Varois association for peace and justice in the Mediterranean. It is also time for France and the European Union to stop being unconditional allies of this State which does not respect international law.”

With one voice, the speakers all demand the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian political prisoners, the establishment of an immediate ceasefire, the creation of a humanitarian corridor, the lifting of the blockade against Gaza and the application of UN Resolution 242 advocating a “just and lasting peace”.

“Every life counts”

France must carry the voice of peace, concludes Jeanine Leclerc, of the Movement for Peace, to applause. The only fight to be fought must be this. No crime should justify another crime. Every life matters.”

Last night, Israel bombed the Gaza Strip after announcing it would intensify its strikes in preparation for a ground invasion. More than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel by Hamas since October 7. In the Gaza Strip, at least 4,385 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in incessant bombings carried out in retaliation by the Israeli army.
